Next meeting!!!

Hi All

After much searching and many calls, Danielle has managed to secure meeting rooms at Dickson and Civic Libraries over the coming months for our meetings (so we can hear each other – yay!!!).

The next two Canberra MQG meetings will be on Wednesdays due to Easter and Anzac Day and then we will be meeting on the fourth Thursday of each month.

The meetings details are as follows:

Wednesday, 27 March, 7:45pm, Dickson Library
Wednesday, 24 April, 7:45pm, Dickson Library
Thursday, 23 May, 7:30pm, Civic Library
Thursday, 27 June, 7:30pm, Civic Library

Thank you all for being patient with us while we have been sorting venues and getting established.

For the coming meeting, don’t forget to bring along your green block. For those that weren’t at the first meeting, we challenged each other to make a block in Emerald, the pantone colour of 2013 (or any green that we had in our stashes for that matter). Also bring along something you’ve worked on this month for a show and tell, we are nosey like that!

Looking forward to seeing you all soon.

First Meeting :: Venue and other information

Thank you everyone for bearing with us while we tried to finalise a suitable venue for our very first meeting. We are now able to let you know that the meeting will be next Tuesday 13th oops, 12th February at 7.30 pm, at the Canberra Labor Club, Teesdale Close, Stirling. Drinks and food will be available for purchase.

We want this to be a very relaxed meeting.  Please bring along something to show the group (finished or in-progress, everything goes!), and by all means bring something to work on while we chat. For our first meeting we would like to do some planning of what everyone would like to get out of the group, the types of topics you want to discuss, projects we could work on, any ideas at all really! We have a few ideas to share with you but would really love to hear about anything you think would be good to do in the group.

We also want to discuss meeting arrangements. We know it’s always going to be difficult to find a day of the week that suits everyone, but we’d like to try our best. We’re likely to not continue meeting on the second Tuesday of the month as it’s close to the meeting of the Canberra Quilters modern quilt group, and some of you may wish to attend both and not find it easy to have two commitments so close together. At this stage, the third week of the month will be when the meetings occur, however we will need to discuss which day is best for the majority.

We thought it would be a great idea to run a little fabric swap too – if you want to participate just bring along a sandwich-sized ziplock bag of quilting fabric scraps, these don’t necessarily have to be cut into 2.5″ squares (a la scrap vomit), but should be sized to be useful!

Finally a few people have asked about kids attending. As the meeting is in the evening and at a licensed venue, it’s probably not appropriate that kids come along this time (other than bubs of course). We are looking to organise daytime events (such as a sit-and-sew day) and will accommodate kids for these where possible and/or appropriate. Any suggestions on suitable venues for a daytime event would be most welcome!

We look forward to seeing you all next Tuesday!

Save the date!!!

Announcing the date of our first meeting!!!

Tuesday 12 February, 7:30pm

The venue is yet to confirm availability so we will make an announcement on that shortly but wanted to get the date in your diary. Please RSVP in the comments here so we know that you’ll be joining us.

There will be a first meeting swap happening too – more details very soon.

Welcome…

…to the Canberra Modern Quilt Guild Blog

Who are we?

The Canberra Modern Quilt Guild will provide an outlet for quilters and crafters of all abilities to connect, in person and online, and share their passion for all things quilting.  The MQG will promote the art of quilting with a modern aesthetic, and provide encouragement and support to new members interested in learning more about quilting.  Through the global MQG movement, we will connect with like-minded people around the world, drawing new inspiration and sharing our ideas.

You can read more about the modern quilting movement at The Modern Quilt Guild blog.

Who are you?

You may be new to quilting, perhaps you have engaged in other crafts over the years, but are interested in finding out what the fuss is all about and would like to try quilting.  Or you may already be a quilter and are looking for others interested in new fabric lines and testing out patchwork and quilting techniques, both tried-and-true or new.  You like exploring the work of others through blogs, Flickr, Instagram, Twitter or other online means, and would like to share your ‘finds’ and connect with other modern quilters.

Come and join us!

We plan to meet up once a month, and perhaps organise longer sewing days at times throughout the year.  We want to know what you would like to get out of your MQG, so please get involved and tell us – whether it’s swaps, challenges, discussions, workshops and tutorials, or guest speakers.  Leave a comment or drop us an email.

We’re also on Twitter (@canberramqg) and will be setting up Facebook and members forum pages soon!
