May Meeting and some news!

Danielle Plus

Another month gone by and it’s meeting time again! First up, the meeting details:

This month we are going to have a BYO project night.

We are expecting to have a large show and tell as there will quite a few quilts that were exhibited in Berry to get through (those who exhibited, please do bring your quilt along).

Also, we have received the Michael Miller Challenge fabrics to distribute so we’ll have those to cut and hand out.

With all that will be happening, we thought it would be good timing for a BYO sewing night – bring your own hand work project to work on. Anything you can work on by hand, for example some binding or hand piecing, quilting, or perhaps it could be a good opportunity to get those labels on your quilts!

Now, onto the exciting part, our news!!!

Addicted to Fabric in Phillip have very kindly offered to host our Guild for sewing days every two months on a Sunday beginning on June 8th EDIT: DUE TO UNFORSEEN CIRCUMSTANCES, THE FIRST SEWING DAY WILL BE JUNE 22 FROM 9AM TO 4PM. We will then be there the second Sunday of August, October and December. We’re very grateful to A2F for allowing us to use their facilities and also really excited to be having regular sewing days. There will be more information at the meeting, looking forward to seeing you all there!

September Meeting – Hand Embroidery

Hello! The September Meeting is coming up and this month we are featuring embroidery. Personally, I think quilting and embroidery go hand in hand. I love combining them and relaxing under a quilt with my stitching. Ahh, bliss!Image

To show you just how fun hand embroidery can be, I have designed a little sampler to show you a few of my favourite stitches.

What you need to bring:

  • A square of fabric (white/neutral is best, however a light print such as a dot, stripe or text is fine too) – it should be at least 6 inches square.
  • Printed design sheetFOUND HERE. Spare copies will be available on the night. If you have the chance you can transfer the design to your fabric before the meeting.
  • Your favourite embroidery needle. Its got to be sharp and pointy with a big eye to thread the floss through.
  • Embroidery floss – Choose your poison. DMC, Anchor, Sublime Floss, Perle 8 etc are all great choices. You can bring as little or as many colours as you wish.
  • Transfer pen – I love the Frixon pens, but you can use a pencil, fine pen, blue washable pen. As long as it can be hidden under the stitches or removed.
  • Scissors. Nothing fancy, just good old fashioned snippers will do.

Looking forward to seeing you all on Thursday, 7:30 at the Civic Library as usual. Don’t forget to bring your latest projects for show and tell!

First Meeting :: Venue and other information

Thank you everyone for bearing with us while we tried to finalise a suitable venue for our very first meeting. We are now able to let you know that the meeting will be next Tuesday 13th oops, 12th February at 7.30 pm, at the Canberra Labor Club, Teesdale Close, Stirling. Drinks and food will be available for purchase.

We want this to be a very relaxed meeting.  Please bring along something to show the group (finished or in-progress, everything goes!), and by all means bring something to work on while we chat. For our first meeting we would like to do some planning of what everyone would like to get out of the group, the types of topics you want to discuss, projects we could work on, any ideas at all really! We have a few ideas to share with you but would really love to hear about anything you think would be good to do in the group.

We also want to discuss meeting arrangements. We know it’s always going to be difficult to find a day of the week that suits everyone, but we’d like to try our best. We’re likely to not continue meeting on the second Tuesday of the month as it’s close to the meeting of the Canberra Quilters modern quilt group, and some of you may wish to attend both and not find it easy to have two commitments so close together. At this stage, the third week of the month will be when the meetings occur, however we will need to discuss which day is best for the majority.

We thought it would be a great idea to run a little fabric swap too – if you want to participate just bring along a sandwich-sized ziplock bag of quilting fabric scraps, these don’t necessarily have to be cut into 2.5″ squares (a la scrap vomit), but should be sized to be useful!

Finally a few people have asked about kids attending. As the meeting is in the evening and at a licensed venue, it’s probably not appropriate that kids come along this time (other than bubs of course). We are looking to organise daytime events (such as a sit-and-sew day) and will accommodate kids for these where possible and/or appropriate. Any suggestions on suitable venues for a daytime event would be most welcome!

We look forward to seeing you all next Tuesday!
