Our next Canberra Modern Quilt Group meeting is on Thursday – again at the civic library from 7.30.
Once again, we’ll be going in through the library’s side door – it’s on the side nearest the Canberra museum.

CMQG Raffle Quilt
After much discussion, planning and designing behind the scenes, we are ready to begin the first Canberra Modern Quilt Guild raffle quilt. Many thanks to Crystal and Nicole for working on the design and getting everything organised. Below you will find the design brief as written by them.
If you would like to make blocks but are unable to attend the meeting tomorrow night, please email us and let us know how many blocks you would like to make so we can distribute the patterns to you.

Now onto the raffle quilt, the rest of this post is from Crystal:
The aim of the raffle quilt is to raise funds for the Guild to bring in a guest speaker/tutor for the benefit of members.
Design brief:
Using the Canberra map as designed by Walter Burley Griffin (above), the quilt has been split up into 64 blocks. The blocks will be divided up amongst the group. Each block will have a finished size of 8 inches and will be an interpretation of the corresponding square on the map. The colour scheme will be Palette 4 as voted. The quilting will finish the off quilt and bring it all back together, echoing the blocks with the road map and lines.Instructions to members for blocks:
Those wishing to participate will be allocated a square (or squares) of the map. It is up to you to interpret the lines and piece your block accordingly. It is not expected that you will replicate it exactly, we are trying to capture the feel of the map design. Each block must measure a finished size of 8 inches (8 1/2 inches including seam allowances) and be made up using the approved fabric and colour scheme. The technique is up to you – this is your block. Its improvisational, not precision. Remember to keep it simple and have fun with it!Fabric and colour scheme:

If you would like to contribute fabric scraps to the quilt, please bring along some scraps of modern fabrics based on this colour scheme. the background of the blocks will be low volume (value) text prints so if you have any of these you can spare, please bring in some scraps of those as well so we can share them around those making the blocks. Nicole and I will be coordinating making the quilt top so please let us know if you have any questions.
Tragedy
Dear Canberra MQG
It is with great sadness that we are posting this. We really have no idea where to start with this. Our Guild has lost one of it’s members this week with the sudden passing of Kathreen Ricketson and her beloved husband Rob Shugg. They drowned while swimming near Coral Bay Western Australia. Kathreen was a dear friend and a fellow founder of our Guild.
Please forgive us if we have not responded to any comments on this blog over the past few days, we have been in in the process of setting up a trust fund for Kathreen and Rob’s children who are 13 and 10. More details can be found at Whip Up. If you have any questions, please contact us at canberramqg@gmail.com and we will do our best to get back to you in due course, email is the best form of correspondence for us right now.
The meeting will be going ahead on Thursday night. We had a question from somebody about coming as a new person. Yes, please. Do come along. Anyone and everyone is welcome, no matter your skill level.

Raffle Quilt Colour Palette :: Vote NOW!!!
Hi there. How’s your creativity this month? What have you been working on? Who else is looking forward to show and tell next week? Don’t forget the change of venue, time and day: we will be at Civic Library, 7:30pm, Thursday 23 May. More details about access will be posted next week.
At our last meeting, we spent quite a bit of time discussing the options for our Guild raffle quilt. We are going to raffle a quilt with the theme “Centenary of Canberra” during the month that Floriade is on. The funds raised from the raffle will assist the Guild to bring in a guest teacher.
Nicole and Crystal volunteered to work together on the design to be ready for our next meeting.
Those present at the meeting decided:
- to make the colour scheme for the quilt based on Floriade;
- that members who wanted to contribute would bring some scrap fabrics along to the next meeting;
- those scraps will be divided between those wanting to make blocks in the following month, ready to be returned to the June meeting.
A colour palette based on Floriade can be interpreted in oh so many ways however, in order to get started, we need to decide which colours we will use. A few pictures from Floriade have been loaded into Kuler and here we have four palettes:

It wasn’t all show-and-tell, meeting everyone and eating Anzac biscuits and chocolate on Thursday night.
We also want to know more – more about quilting that is.
We came up with a list of things we want to learn – and would love any more ideas:
■Mitred borders – Danielle brought in her applique quilt with freshly mitred borders – very inspiring
■Needle-turn applique
■Y seams
■English paper piecing
■Machine paper piecing, and
■Free motion quilting.

What a P-Fun meeting!
Thanks so much to those who came along tonight. Some familiar faces and and a few new ones too! It’s always nice to meet more quilty peeps. There was a really positive vibe in the room tonight and many laughs along the way, so much P-fun with the P-faffs!
We had P-fabulous show and tell with loads of inspiring works – I only managed a few (out-of-focus) pictures so if you have any additional photos, do send them through.
In addition to our show and tell, we brainstormed ideas for our Guild raffle quilt. Thanks to Crystal and Nicole for volunteering their design services – we are looking forward to seeing your sketches when they become available.

Hi All
After much searching and many calls, Danielle has managed to secure meeting rooms at Dickson and Civic Libraries over the coming months for our meetings (so we can hear each other – yay!!!).
The next two Canberra MQG meetings will be on Wednesdays due to Easter and Anzac Day and then we will be meeting on the fourth Thursday of each month.

For the coming meeting, don’t forget to bring along your green block. For those that weren’t at the first meeting, we challenged each other to make a block in Emerald, the pantone colour of 2013 (or any green that we had in our stashes for that matter). Also bring along something you’ve worked on this month for a show and tell, we are nosey like that!

First Meeting :: Venue and other information
Thank you everyone for bearing with us while we tried to finalise a suitable venue for our very first meeting. We are now able to let you know that the meeting will be next Tuesday 13th oops, 12th February at 7.30 pm, at the Canberra Labor Club, Teesdale Close, Stirling. Drinks and food will be available for purchase.
We want this to be a very relaxed meeting. Please bring along something to show the group (finished or in-progress, everything goes!), and by all means bring something to work on while we chat. For our first meeting we would like to do some planning of what everyone would like to get out of the group, the types of topics you want to discuss, projects we could work on, any ideas at all really! We have a few ideas to share with you but would really love to hear about anything you think would be good to do in the group.
We also want to discuss meeting arrangements. We know it’s always going to be difficult to find a day of the week that suits everyone, but we’d like to try our best. We’re likely to not continue meeting on the second Tuesday of the month as it’s close to the meeting of the Canberra Quilters modern quilt group, and some of you may wish to attend both and not find it easy to have two commitments so close together. At this stage, the third week of the month will be when the meetings occur, however we will need to discuss which day is best for the majority.
We thought it would be a great idea to run a little fabric swap too – if you want to participate just bring along a sandwich-sized ziplock bag of quilting fabric scraps, these don’t necessarily have to be cut into 2.5″ squares (a la scrap vomit), but should be sized to be useful!
Finally a few people have asked about kids attending. As the meeting is in the evening and at a licensed venue, it’s probably not appropriate that kids come along this time (other than bubs of course). We are looking to organise daytime events (such as a sit-and-sew day) and will accommodate kids for these where possible and/or appropriate. Any suggestions on suitable venues for a daytime event would be most welcome!
