Next meeting – 24 July 7.30 pm

Hi everyone!

How is everyone going with their Michael Miller challenge projects? We’re really looking forward to seeing what everyone has been working on. Here’s a little sneak peek of Crystal’s improv circles! So, only another week to stitch down your binding, or whatever else you may need to do to finish, and at the meeting on Thursday we will vote for our favourites. The victor will win a prize donated by Polka Dot Tea – two metres of Cotton Couture solids of the winner’s choice.

And of course there’ll be a vote of a different kind – to elect our new committee. Everyone should have received an email from our returning officer Georgie Kelley asking for nominations. If you haven’t received the info, and/or would like to nominate yourself, or someone else (with their permission), please send an email to Georgie – georgie.kelley@gmail.com.  If you’re not able to make it to the meeting, you can still vote. Just make sure you let Georgie know.

See you on Thursday!

Crystal MM challenge

Wanna be part of a textile festival in France?

The International Textile Festival in France this year has asked for entries from across the world.

They have asked for grandmother’s flower garden hexies – made from scraps and up-cycled materials.

They would like to receive flowers made by stitching together seven hexies. They want the hexies to be made by hand.

It’s an odd size – 5cm across (1.97 inches) so it would be best to print out the pattern. Click on this link for the PDF of the pattern and instructions.  Grandmother’s flower garden – GB

The flowers are due on 30 July. According to Australia Post’s international guidelines, the flowers would need to be sent mid July.Let’s aim to hand in our flowers at the June meeting – Thursday 26 June. The guild will pay the postage.

Entries close April 18 for modern quilt show

We’ve just received an email from the Wollongong Modern Quilt Guild, who are organising the Modern Quilt Show in Berry on 3-4 May.

They have let us know that entries need to be submitted online by 18 April at www.modernquilters.com.au

Their list of prizes is on their Wollongong Modern Quilt Guild blog at wmqg.tumblr.com

They are expecting 120-150 quilts in the show and a kids section of 20-30 quilts or quilted items.

The Wollongong group will be exhibiting their challenge quilts and encourage us to do the same.

Next meeting

One week until our March meeting. Next meeting is Thursday 27 March. For newbies, we meet at the civic library, 7.30pm. This month, Crystal will demonstrate improv curves.

We will also be swapping the name tags we’ve been busy making for the secret partner swap.

See you there!!

Wrapping up the February meeting

Wrapping up the February meeting

Show and tell is one of our favourite parts of our Canberra Modern Quilt Guild meetings – and February’s meeting was another shining example.

There were dozens of quilts on show, and this montage features four of them.

The first quilt was made by Jen, one of our new members. Jen says she loves colour and this quilt just pops with colour!!

The second quilt is by Clair, using a range of the fabric she designed. Her blog is http://beeandlotus.blogspot.com.au/

Next is a quilt by our guest speaker Judy. She was in New York a couple of years ago and was inspired by an exhibition of red and white quilts she saw.

And next is Julie’s quilt, part of our Riley Blake fabric challenge. Julie added blues and greens hoping for an antidote to the heatwave that most of Australia just experienced.

Judy’s dyed fabric

Judy's dyed fabric

Our guest speaker on Thursday night, Judy, brought along boxes and boxes of her dyed fabric, equipment, books and other fabric for destashing. She was so generous. The guild now has a fledgling library and also dyeing powders and equipment. Here’s a sample of her fabric, all cut into strips and ready for use. Thank you Judy!!

Judy also mentioned fibre artist Melody Johnson on the night. Here’s a link to her website. Super stunning quilts! http://www.wowmelody.com/

Guest speaker – fabric dyeing

Our next meeting is this Thursday – 7.30pm civic library.

We’re having a guest speaker this time – Judy – who has been dyeing fabric for years and is coming along to give us an introduction.

She is also destashing and bringing along boxes of fabric to give away. I’m not sure how much – but she’s asked for help getting up the stairs…!

And there are two more big ticket items on Thursday.

  1. We’ll be signing up for the next Modern Quilt Guild challenge – for Michael Miller fabric. It’s another of the Guild’s fabric give aways. There are 12 on the list already, let us know asap if you want to be part of this challenge, by emailing canberramqg@gmail.com
  2. Plus a group of us will be bringing along the quilts we made in the last challenge, which used Riley Blake fabric. Watch this space for great group photos of our quilts.

Are you ready?
It’s time for another fabric challenge!
The Modern Quilt Guild has today announced that Michael Miller Fabrics is the next sponsor of the 4th annual MQG members fabric challenge.

The fabric we will be using is a brand new collection called Petal Pinwheels. A fun graphic collection that will cut up so well.

It’s open to members of the Modern Quilt Guild world wide, so if you’re a member let us know as soon as possible if you’d like to sign up to the challenge – canberramqg@gmail.com. This could also be your opportunity to join the guild…

Riley Blake challenge

Riley Blake challenge

One of the joys of being in the Canberra Modern Quilt Group is the international fabric give aways! The first one we’ve been involved in – which closes today – was the Riley Blake challenge. Along with thousands of other quilters world wide, we received packs of fabric to make something quilted. This is Sylvia’s quilt. We’ll be bringing our challenge quilts along to the next meeting – 27 February 7.30 at the civic library.
