Guest speaker – fabric dyeing

Our next meeting is this Thursday – 7.30pm civic library.

We’re having a guest speaker this time – Judy – who has been dyeing fabric for years and is coming along to give us an introduction.

She is also destashing and bringing along boxes of fabric to give away. I’m not sure how much – but she’s asked for help getting up the stairs…!

And there are two more big ticket items on Thursday.

  1. We’ll be signing up for the next Modern Quilt Guild challenge – for Michael Miller fabric. It’s another of the Guild’s fabric give aways. There are 12 on the list already, let us know asap if you want to be part of this challenge, by emailing canberramqg@gmail.com
  2. Plus a group of us will be bringing along the quilts we made in the last challenge, which used Riley Blake fabric. Watch this space for great group photos of our quilts.

Get ready...it's time for another fabric challenge!

Are you ready?
It’s time for another fabric challenge!
The Modern Quilt Guild has today announced that Michael Miller Fabrics is the next sponsor of the 4th annual MQG members fabric challenge.

The fabric we will be using is a brand new collection called Petal Pinwheels. A fun graphic collection that will cut up so well.

Note that our next meeting is 27 February and the cut-off to sign up to this challenge is 28 February. It’s open to members of the Modern Quilt Guild world wide, so if you’re a member let us know as soon as possible if you’d like to sign up to the challenge – canberramqg@gmail.com. This could also be your opportunity to join the guild…

Guidelines
• The challenge runs from March 2014-June 23, 2014.
• Winners announced July 8, 2014.
• Members may make anything they want as long as it is quilted!
• Add in any solid or Michael Miller printed fabric.
• You do not need to use all the fabrics given to you.
• Upload and share your photos to the Fabric Challenge Forum on the Community site here.
• MQGs can create guild specific challenges, as long as the other guidelines are upheld.
• Don’t forget to use the #mqgfabricchallenge on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.
• Fabric sign ups end Feb 28th, 2014.
• If you belong to a guild you DO NOT need to fill out the form your guild leaders will do that for you.

A note from Michael Miller:
This year we will pick 3 winners. Each one will receive a posting on our blog and “A year of Free Fabric”. Every month for a year we will send you a “Goody Box” filled with fabric from our newest collections.
Okay read that one again. A whole year of fabric! How fantastic is that!
We cannot wait to see what you make!
Check out the last Michael Miller fabric challenge winners here.

Riley Blake challenge

Riley Blake challenge

One of the joys of being in the Canberra Modern Quilt Group is the international fabric give aways! The first one we’ve been involved in – which closes today – was the Riley Blake challenge. Along with thousands of other quilters world wide, we received packs of fabric to make something quilted. This is Sylvia’s quilt. We’ll be bringing our challenge quilts along to the next meeting – 27 February 7.30 at the civic library.

Modern quilt show – 3-4 May

The Wollongong Modern Quilt Guild is holding what they say is Australia’s first modern quilt show.

It will be on 3-4 May at the Berry School of Arts, NSW.

One of the Wollongong members has posted on our Facebook page, (Canberra Modern Quilt Guild) saying that more details will be available soon:

This is just a teaser so that you can get stitching your entry to a deadline and book the weekend into your calendar.

Sponsorship enquiries are welcome.

Please contact us at modernquiltshow.au@gmail.com.

We hope some of you will be able to enter your beautiful quilts and maybe pop up to visit the show?

There’s been a lot of interest on Facebook already – maybe we’ll have to hire a bus!!

We’ll let you know when we have more details – such as how to enter a quilt in the show.

Secret partner name tag swap

We’re going to organise a name tag swap.

If you’re not sure what a name tag / badge is or want some inspiration, you can look here: http://pinterest.com/phxmqg/quilty-name-tags/ or http://southsoundmqg.blogspot.com.au/2013/08/name-tag-resources.html and there are many other examples online.

This will be open for all CMQG members and you’ll need to register by Friday 7 February 2014 to participate. I’ll aim to send the name of your partner by Sunday 16 February and name tags will need to be finished by the March CMQG meeting Thursday 27 March.

Guidelines:

As this is a secret swap, you won’t know who’s making your name tag until the March meeting when you receive it.

You can include a preference of colour or something (eg an object / animal or something) you would like on your name badge.

You can also ask to include your blog/Instagram/Flickr/twitter address on the name tag but as the name tag needs to be wearable and able to be seen, nothing too long / too much info. If there isn’t space on the front of the tag, your swap partner may include this on the back of the name tag.

The name tag is to be no larger than 9cm in any direction – shape is completely up to you.

The tag must have a fastening / pin on the back and the recipient’s name to stand out clearly.

Some kind of patchwork or quilting in the construction and be “modern” in theme.

This is a secret swap so make sure you keep the details of your swap partner a secret until after your tag has been received by them.
If your swap partner has provided this, I will also send you their Blog, Instagram, Flickr, Twitter addresses so you can get some inspiration of what they might like.

Photos of the badges will be put up on instagram @canberramqg and CMQG webpage.

We will have angel quilters available if needed. What this means is if you’ve signed up but realise you can’t finish the badge in time, please tell us at least a week before the March meeting and the angel quilter can make the badge for your partner.
If you can’t make the March meeting, can you please send your finished badge to the CMQG PO Box address so it arrives before the March meeting.

To register, click on the link to open the Google form I’ve created.

I hope you all have fun with this, and if there are any questions or issues talk to us.

Thanks
Carolyn

Thursday night – labels

Posting a note from Nicole –

Hi quilting peeps, I’m going to be doing a little demonstration on Thursday night of making hand-embroidered labels for quilts or anything else. I thought I’d do a ‘Canberra MQG’ label as a demonstration. So, if anyone would like to have a go on Thursday and make one with me, you will need to bring a few things:

  • Iron on transfer pencil (if you have one)
  • Piece of hard, clear plastic (such as a container lid) for tracing against
  • Square of fabric approx 8 by 4 inch (pale colour is best)
  • Needle
  • Embroider thread
  • Scissors

Cheers Nicole xo

First meeting for 2014

I hope you’ve all had a wonderful start to 2014 and have managed some time for quilting.

Letting you know that we’re back in business for meetings for the new year. As with last year, we’ll be meeting at the civic library on the fourth Thursday of each month, from 7.30pm.

The first meeting will be on Thursday 23rd January. We’ve had a few enquiries from newcomers. If you haven’t been before, you will see that there is a back entrance to the library – its opposite the main entrance to the library.

We’ll be running our usual ‘share our skills’ workshop at the meeting – more details coming. And there should be lots of great show and tell on the night.

Look forward to seeing you there!
